Ferry is not self-propelled but moved by small boat attached to its side. The crossing is on Laguna Garzón (a sandy marsh with a narrow outlet to the Atlantic Ocean), between the Departments of Maldonado and Rocha. (Uruguay is too small to have provinces; it's administrative subdivisions are called "departamentos".)
